Popular video games in the market are usually not tailored to those who experience visual or cognitive disabilities as they are a minority group of consumers. Games are typically made for able-bodied players without any consideration for those who may suffer from colour blindness, light sensitivity, or more.

The Design Challenge

How can I provide a platform that will resolve the lack of accessibility options in games?

The Process

Brand Guidelines

For this design initiative, I first started with conducting primary and secondary research on the target user group which were gamers with visual and cognitive limitations. Using the user research insights, I was able to consolidate on what solutions I wanted to offer with my design. I then proceeded with the conduction of user journeys and the navigation of a sitemap prior to wireframing. In addition to finalizing on a high-fidelity prototype, I also created a promotional website to promote the feature highlights of the NewGen plugin.

Research

Knowing this lack of awareness for accessible gameplay, I decided to use my skills as a user experience designer to create an accessibility plugin to be used by both gamers and developers. The main components of this plugin are a UI editor as well as a development guide. Once NewGen is activated, simply select from a range of accessibility options to customize the detected game interface. The selection can be saved as a Preset for quicker access in the future. On the other hand, the development guide serves as a way to educate designers and developers on how to create accessible games. Ultimately, the goal of NewGen is to make video games enjoyable for everyone.
