Design Concept

The design concept of Be Safe Out There is inspired from my personal experience growing up with the rise of social media. According to the Congress in the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), 13 is the minimum age for most social media sites. However, children aged 8-12 are already eager and curious to learn about social media platforms. I believe that there is not enough guidance and education for children about using social media, which is a huge part of their lives later on. Be Safe Out There uses storytelling and compelling illustrations to introduce children to social media.

The Process

Brand Guidelines

As my thesis project, I started this project by compiling a research report on social media and its risks for children, as well as the positive aspects of social media. The current research question for this project is, “How can we educate tweens about the negative and positive aspects of social media, in order to prepare them for using social media platforms when they become teenagers?” This project is completed in four months, starting with a mind map, a sitemap, user flows, and branding. In order to attract a younger audience, a mascot is created as well.
